About this place
연천향교는 연천군을 대표하는 조선시대 지방 교육기관이다. 연천향교는 1398년에 읍내리 부근에 창건되었는데, 1658년에 1차례 이전하였고, 한국전쟁 중 전소되어 1965년 차탄리 부근에 재건되었다가 도로공사로 인해 1989년 현재의 위치로 다시 이전되었다. 건물의 배치는 전형적인 전학후묘의 형태이다. 지금은 교육적 기능은 없어지고, 매년 공자 탄신일(음력 8월 27일)에 공자를 기리는 석전제를 홀리고, 매월 음력 1일과 15일에 분향하는 제사의 기능과 함께 청소년 인성교육의 장으로 활용되고 있다.
